Re: And another thing...

(Inmate): Within the context of high SPLs and that whole issue:
(Paul C): 6"-12" is good. And always use a foam windscreen.

(Inmate): Good advice, except that 6" is really too close on trumpets and trombones. Players can move around enough that such a short distance will result in highly variable level and quality. Compressing and EQing can help a lot to get a more-or-less consistent sound. I recommend 12" as a minimum, with 18" as ideal depending on the situation and the performer (for pop and jazz).

(Paul C. reply): Yes, you're right... 12"-18" for section... but a player will crowd the mic for solos, and 6" is an abxolute minimum for sax. You are correct, trumpet and bone need to be further back, 12" for solos.

A saxophonist (or other wind) will "be his own sound man", working the mic closer for solos, back for section work.

(Inmate): Sounds like you're one of us who's actually thinking and paying attention!

(Paul C. reply): Thanks! I'm not a soundman as such, I am a saxophonist, have played about 40 years now... but have run my own bands, doubled as sound and player in various bands. Everything I know I learned on stage.
