Center Clusters

Pro studio recording equipment and music production/industry.

I want to know; what is it about mono center clusters of speakers that some people seem to find so abhorrent? If the system is going to be run in mono (because in many situations stereo arrangement is nothing but an added annoyance) why not use a central cluster that covers the entire area?
