Funny you should post this soldermizer - I got me missus to give me a hand doing something very similar yesterday, only using my onboard Azalia audio and my Sony DVP-S725D DVD player (which claims to be an audiophile-quality CD player). I synced up the two sources, using a CD in the Sony and a rip I made of it (using EAC, and verified via AccurateRip, FWIW) on the PC. After learning of WASAPI etc thanks to hfavandepas' post above (thanks for your insights hfavandepas - I've been meaning to reply :-\ ) I used foobar2000 with the WASAPI component. I was keen to avoid witnessing the new quality this player afforded before the test, so the test administrator adjusted volume levels 'til they were equal. The results? I picked the source correctly 3 times out of 8; that is, my results could have been higher had I left the 'phones off and threw a coin! (Which is how the sources were chosen for each of the eight runs by my lady). After the test I compared foobar2k's WASAPI output with its usual output and could hear no difference. Nor could I notice any change between foobar2k's output (WASAPI or not) and that of my usual players (vlc/mpc).
I'm tending toward scoring an amp (eyeing up the harman/kardon HK 3490) and some passive speakers and sticking with the onboard sound. I've always yearned for a decent amp and speakers to connect to the Sony, and am finally in a position to acquire them (should have mentioned this in my first post perhaps). Plus, I can only wear 'phones for so long before the ears start hurting. And I'll be able to use the HK as a DAC for my PC-based audio should the shame of using onboard audio overwhelm me, won't I? The HK is technically a stereo receiver - I considered getting an A/V receiver instead (setting up a home theatre is a goal) but those seem to focus on features rather than performance/quality.
