I have tried a few and they pretty much dont do much or hurt things.

So far the best I have tried is HDPHX which is a vst plugin that cplay and jriver can use pretty easily:

Also not exactly what you are asking for, but Omnisone is interesting and you can do a bunch of fiddeling with your soundstage, though the documentation is lame. Worth a try
