Flac player playback levels for mac?

I am using a few different players for mac (playing flac files)

Each seems to have a different playback level.

Cog is much louder at 100% than other players- and seems to distort at some points.

MacAmp - a really old player is lower - and VLC at 100% seems a little louder - and sounds different (I believe macAmp runs under emulation)

Does anyone have a good handle on which is the best flac compatible player for mac?

I also seem to be getting very small intermitant dropouts of playback on my macbook going via USB to a PS Audio DLIII dac. Any clues?
