Dead Horse revisited: SIL refuses to let me buy a Mac

I say 2 year old Macbook Pros sell on Ebay(not just listed) for $200-$300 less than what was paid. $500 Windows Laptops are worthless after a few years.

He says the outlay is too high and $400 will be lost after a few years. I say Apple has Free Money for 12 months.

He says the Apple is over-priced to start and all I'm going to be doing is writing with Word and having several search engines open while playing music. Any $500 Windows machine will do.

Every time I spend an hour at Newegg or Tiger or Dell, then various Laptop Review sites I find this machine has a dim screen, that one's is bright but the touchpad sucks, etc., etc.

Is there a can't miss Asus or Lenovo or Dell around $4-$600 that will do it? I'll spend the $1200 if it will get me through (I'm 66) to the day the Meat Wagon arrives.
