I couldn't agree with you more. For some years, Verizon had no service in my house, but ATT was OK. Verizon now has better coverage, but their promises for more than five years of "coverage soon" put the company on my personal black list. In my opinion, it's better to work on a non-contract basis at least until you have sorted out the coverage issues (assuming you have a stable usage pattern). In my personal case I detest telephones, especially portable telephones because of the "always interrupting at the worst possible moment". I also detest small screen devices, because of my aged eyes and fat fingers. So I use $100 /year prepaid service from ATT and spend the money I save on high speed internet and downloads of hi-res music.
Phones could be made to work seamlessly over wi-fi networks if someone wanted to figure out how to do this. (Probably the biggest problem is regulatory hurdles set up to benefit existing telecommunications monopolists and government spy agencies.)
