RE: Crap Mastering Alert (Loudness Wars)

No, it was not "normalization". Normalization is a process of multiplying each sample by the same gain factor, such that the loudest sample in the track (or entire album) attains a predetermined level with the other samples falling in to place. The relative difference in musical peaks is preserved. Normalization has at most a very minor effect on sound quality once the listener has adjusted his volume control so as to equalize levels. If normalization increases levels (the usual case) there is no loss of information other than addition of dither noise.

Compression or limiting or whatever you want to call it, is a time varying non-linear process. It distorts the sound. In particular, it changes the musical dynamics, removing the natural variability of the peaks. Information is lost.

On this album the last track is free of compression and has clean sound. Since the difference in quality between the first and last tracks is so obvious one can only conclude that the engineers were incompetent. But then, that pretty much sums up the majority of the recording industry.
