I would never call it "ripping" vinyl.

OT I know but I agree that "ripping" is an ugly term in this context. As it describes converting an analogue waveform to "bits", my guess is that it's a misuse of the widely-used acronymn for Raster Image Processor. See e.g. link.

In my day at least, folk in the print trade would routinely talk of "ripping" a job, i.e. of using a dedicated (and eye-wateringly expensive) computer to make a print-ready raster image out of a pre-assembled mix of text and vector- and bit-map graphics. I presume they still do.

When the technology emerged in the late 1980s, an MB of RAM was exotic, an Intel 386 was SOTA and a 10MB HDD downright profligate. "Ripping" could be a heart-in-mouth business.
