DAC to compliment my AR CD3 and play other sources

I have been very happy with my Audio Research CD3 CD player since I bought it about 8 years ago, but I think the time has come to buy an external DAC, which will be used to both compliment my CD3 when it used as a transport, and will allow me to stream other digital sources. I have some criteria for my new DAC, most of which are probably wrong, as I know very little about digital electronics:

1. I want to use my CD3 as a CD transport. It has both XLR Balanced AES/EBU 110-ohm 4V P-P, and a BNC coax SPDIF 75-ohm 0.7V P-P outputs, but I would very much like to use the XLR connector to link to the DAC.

2. I want the DAC to have a USB3 input (My new PC based laptop has USB3 –am I right in thinking that although USB3 is backward compatible with USB2 that a native USB3 connection will in time be superior to USB2 for audio uses - I plead total ignorance on this issue)

3. It would be great, although not a must, if the DAC had a volume control. My integrated amp (Jadis DA60) is switchable to use as a power amplifier, but does not have a remote volume control, and as I get older I would love a remote control volume.

4. Must be capable of playing 24/196 files from its USB input.

5. Must sound exceptionally good – and be much better on plain old CD than my CD3.

Does such a DAC exist? Are my criteria wrong or limiting?

All comments are much appreciated.

John
