It's true, these amps do generate a good bit of heat. That's the case with any class A amplifier, whether it be solid-state or tubed.Aside from that, I do believe they are quite easy to live with, especially compared to many other tubed amplifiers. The design is conservative, so the 6SN7s will last for a good many years. This is also true of the 6AS7Gs. Once you have a good set, they will also perform well for many years. These amps do not behave like the typical transformer coupled pentode PP or triode SET amps, that seem to eat output tubes on a regular basis. Many of us have 6AS7Gs that are still working well after 10 years and even longer.
The preamp used will not effect bias of offset adjustment. This is an independent function.
Tube replacement costs? New Sensor sells the Sovtek 6AS7G for $13 each. I've seen the stock Chinese 6SN7s go for as little as $5 each. Domestic versions can cost many times more, depending on what you desire.
