A short while ago I made some posts regarding driving my Sound Lab speakers with my MA-1 amps. I have been having problems getting a linear response.Ralph responded to the thread suggesting that I install some negative feedback.
Well, I have just made the changes. I now have feedback switchable, ranging from 0/2/4dB. I am now listening to my amps with 4dB of negative feedback and the change was immediately noticeable. The most notable change and one I was not initially looking for was a big reduction in distortion. Before, when listening to my system loudly for over say ½ hour my ears would begin to feel uncomfortable, definitely unpleasant. Now that I have made the changes this audible distortion has totally gone. It is early days to decide on how much feedback to use but the sound is much cleaner with no loss in life. I am assuming that the culprit was odd order harmonics.I have spent a few hours on the web reading reports and white papers that argue the pros and cons of negative feedback. I can only say that a small amount is definitely beneficial in my system.
