Mark, only recently you alluded to the evils of the step-up transformer. I am glad that you were adventurous enough to try one anyway and then to admit that the results are good. I have been thinking along the same lines. I wondered about the Stevens and Billington step-ups that are widely touted on the Audio Asylum. Perhaps I will try a pair of those, and we can compare notes. I am wanting a Koetsu Urushi and one of these two brands of step-up transformer. If one does away with the cascode, one might think about other tubes at the phono input, such as the 5842/WE417A or 6SL7 in dual-differential config. I have goose bumps already. What about the Shelter 901? I hear that's pretty nice too.
