the grid of one half of the dual-differential amplifier at the input of the Atma amplifier is driven directly by the output of a single-ended pre-amp. The grid of the second half of the dual-differential pair is connected to ground in this instance, and this section is then driven via its cathode, which produces a 180 degree out of phase signal at the plate with respect to the signal at the plate of the grid-driven first section. Thus you get a balanced output to drive the output stage. So, in reality, the whole differential amplifier is involved in splitting the phase of the single-ended input. Phase-splitting is required when any single-ended signal is driving any push-pull output stage. It involves imperfect processing of the signal in a way that can be avoided with fully balanced circuits.
