Until I was fortunate enough to obtain an MP1, I drove my amps with a single-ended pre-amp. There were no problems whatever, and the sonic results were as great as the pre-amp allowed them to be. In other words, the limiting factor will be the quality of the pre-amp, not whether it is single-ended vs balanced. Since I have no experience with any balanced pre-amp other than the MP1, I cannot say whether balanced pre-amps have an inherent advantage vs single-ended ones. I CAN say that the MP1 is superior to my previous single-ended pre-amp, however. There are reasons why a balanced pre-amp may be inherently advantageous when driving a fully balanced amplifier like the Atmas: With balanced drive you get the full benefits of the noise cancellation inherent in balanced circuits vs single-ended ones AND you eliminate phase-splitting. (When the balanced input of the amp is driven single-ended, one half of the dual-differential input stage functions as a phase-splitter to derive a balanced drive for the output stage.)
