Re: Thinking Out Loud - Sony SCD 777ES

I had my Sony SCD-777ES modified by Allen and the unit is now fully balanced out. The difference between the Sony SCD-1 (balanced ) and SCD-777ES (SE) is the output stage. While the digital filter VC24 is balanced the section behind the filter is SE, the SCD-1 output is made balanced with 4 Opamps at the end. Allen installed two modification PCB's and fitted them nicely in the unit. The unit has now two sets of outputs. SE and Balanced, the original SE output still intact.

I visited Allen with Emile Sprenger in Munich and listened to the modified and unmodified XB -940 unit. That convinced me to go for the mod. Specially with the M-60 being differential, it made a lot of sense to have the player modified to balanced.

I was maybe lucky as Allen wanted to use my player at the Frankfurt High End show, and the mods were done failty quickly. The unit received very good responses, even a Sony engineer was impressed. The unit sounded analog and no transitor artifact.

Emile finished his Allen Wright RTP-3C differential preamp. A long project definitely, but the first reaction seemed to indicate it was worth it. Silky and ultra detailed.

Allen Wright is an artist .. very nice .. slightly unorganised ... but very good idea's.
