Paul: I have been fretting about this same issue. I have some experience "playing" with the dual-differential/cascode at the input of the phono stage in my MP1. In order to make it "work" one inevitably ends up with an amount of current that is suboptimal for the operation of a dual-differential amp WITHOUT a cascode. This came up in a conversation with Ralph, and he noted that first one must design for the cascode as the determining factor for current (and the cascode doesn't "want" as much current as a pure dd topology), then let things fall into place for the dual-differential amplifier. (Sorry, Ralph, as I am likely to be fracturing your much better logic.) So, if one converts the amplifier input from cascode to no-cascode simply by use of jumpers to bypass the cascode section, one probably ends up with a suboptimal dual-differential amplifier. Reducing the value of Rk in the CCS seems to be in order to provide more current for the now pure dual-differential operation. Why don't you guys try that? Maybe you will get more "jump".
