Re: Method to track down hum and tube crackle

0

Well... This is an interesting process, and I'm not at all sure I've got the answer yet. (1) I switched four of the six input tubes between amps and the hum and crackle switched with them. Good sign - must be an input tube problem. (2) I then switched two of the tubes back to their original amps, and the hum and crackle stayed in second amp. Still good - now the problem should be narrowed down to one or both of these two tubes. (3) I next moved one of those remaining two tubes. Result: NO HUM out of either amp. Instead there is a mid-frequency buzz out of both amps that was not there before. ?? (4) I move the tube from step 3 back to the other amp - still no hum and this was the configuration from step 2 above where there was hum. Still have the new mid-frequency buzz, though.

All very curious. I'll leave things as they stand (with the buzz) and let the amps play for a couple of hours and see what happens.

Thanks for staying with me on this, Mark.
