Once the PA became strong enough, the stage volume became a limiting factor in sound quality.
An acquaintance was mixing on tour with Tom Petty some years back.
Robert gave me a tour of the stage setup and when we were behind the stage he pointed out an OLD VOX ac30 AMP surrounded by road cases and a couple mics. That was Tom's guitar sound while the stuff in front was "on" for looks.
Last time i played live, it was through the PA with floor monitors, i had no bass amp. This was weird, cool in that i could hear everyone more clearly than the old way but i had trouble hearing my bass, the only thing i didn't like.
