RE "cheap exponential horns which can work well to 500Hz?"The horn I chose + like: a pair of "long throw" (305mm deep), 2 inch horns from ebay vendor ZXPC.

I mounted them in a cabinet (some gutted JBL Cabaret cabs), and extended the mouth to 50*70cm. I found that it is quite easy to get this horn sounding good. You may have forgotten, but you've already seen a thread about this - see post 39 :)

Since you like to play loud, I guess you'd enjoy this type of horn loaded with a small, robust cone mid playing 500-2000Hz.
By contrast: I've also recently been experimenting with cone drivers on an old 2 inch Community Audio horn (built for the M200), thinking I might repurpose the horn flares. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be as easy to get the Community horn sounding good. Maybe because the throat is long (nearly parallel) and the mouth is relatively small.
I bought these Community boxes for parts ...not realising one of the M200 drivers was missing :(
The single M200 driver I have gave good measured results on my horn (better than the spec sheet), as previously posted on this forum:
