yes, whatever negative effects you're getting at higher output levels (I am guessing it's harshness or what "we" sometimes call congestion) will likely be mitigated with a more sensitive loudspeaker.86 dB loudspeakers should probably have at least 50 watts per channel for general purpose use in a reasonable sized room (just an informed estimate/SWAG); 100 watts is better. I'd consider 86 dB SPL at 1 meter for 1 watt (i.e., 2.83 VAC into 8 ohms) to be on the low side for my sensitivity; but I am a fleapower amp and theater-type loudspeaker kind of guy (my usual loudspeakwers' sensitivity is ca. 102 dB/watt at 1 meter, give or take).
"all things being equal" ;) Now, here's the thing. Sensitivity per se isn't unimportant, but the nature of the loudspeaker load presented to the amp is usually at least as important. It all boils down to how "easy to drive" the loudspeaker is, and how sensitive a given amplifier is to a "difficult" load.
Loudspeakers present a complex, reactive load to an amplifier -- the impedance varies as a function of frequency, reflecting the electrical and mechanical properties of the drivers, the cabinet (speaker driver loading), and the crossover network(s). A designer may make a loudspeaker with a very benign impedance curve, or a really "hostile" impedance curve. Some amps won't much care either way. Many (not all) vacuum tube amplifiers have fairly high output impedance ("low damping factor") and "feel" the speaker load more than, e.g., a typical, modern, low output impedance, high-power, high current capacity
soiled, umm, I mean solid state amplifier ;)Some "low" sensitivity loudspeakers may work OK with a lower-powered, low DF vacuum tube amp; if so, it likely represents the how "easy" of a load they present to the amp.
HTH.
all the best,
