My first was the Nelson Pass designed DIYAudio Sony VFET push-pull. That was my first diy solid state amp after many years of diy SETs. Then I built a VFET 2SJ28 Hammond 193V loaded single ended amp, and just recently finished a THF-51S SissySIT.
My favorites are the SE 2SJ28 VFET and SissySIT amps.
I have not had the opportunity to listen to actual First Watt amps.
I don't think the DIYAudio Sony VFET amp has a First Watt equivalent.
The Hammond 193V VFET 2SJ28 is Class A single ended, similar to the SIT-1 and SIT-2, except that I believe the SIT-1 is resistor loaded and the SIT-2 is CCS loaded. And of course the First Watt amps use the Pass SITs.
The SissySIT is similar to the SIT-3, in that they are both DEF amps. DEF stands for Depletion / Enhancement Follower, which is a push-pull design by Nelson Pass that has an enhancement mode MOSFET and a depletion mode SIT in the push-pull stage. The SIT-3 used the last of Nelson Pass's SITs and he matched the MOSFET to the SIT for Vgs for proper bias. The SissySIT is a DEF based Zen Mod design and the SIT is the Tokin THF-51S. It has an auto bias system, so close matching of the output devices is not necessary.
At this point I don't think I will go for the final Nelson Pass DIYAudio design. The three amps that I have built are a good representation of the lower powered SIT amplifier designs.
My plan is to build the Nelson Pass designed BAF 2015 Single Ended 50W amp with Tokin THF-51S. This is a CCS loaded single ended design. Even though I have efficient speakers, I would like to try a higher powered Class A single ended amp, and also try CCS loaded versus the inductor loaded SE amp that I already have.
