Hello mhardy6647
In my opinion you are partially right. My opinion is based on comparation of various speakers and setups. Sometimes ppl tend to express their opinion on isolated and without relative comparisons. When you say "eat" in my opinion you are right, but it´s an isolated opinion for me. All solution are compromises. You just need to find the best one. The purpose of this forum is that.
About this type of speakers, besides the ones i´ve heard outside my house, i have mine, Fostex FE208Sigma in Jericho Horn cabinets, Fostex FE208ES-R (alnico) in original factory recommended cabinets with T500mk2 twter, Fe166en with factory recommended bass reflex cabinets and factory recommended front loaded horns, Lowther EX4 with Fidelio cabinets, PHY-HP H30- LB15 sag that i use either with PHY-HP twters or the T500mk2 with 130 kg of sand filled open baffles and also a pair of field coils Wolf Von Langa Black & White speaker.
This are the high efficiency speakers that i have in hand to formulate an opinion and can tell you that for 3 watts a single driver even with the proposed by me is an excellent solution. My best buy would be Fostex FE166en with either front horn cabinets or cheap bass reflex cabinets. The second ones sound about the same, but without the scale/presence from the low end of the front loaded ones. I usually use them with the paper treated and the baskets with cheap Dynamat type treated baskets They don´t need filter but work better with a resistor/cap in parallel in the amps i used. Paper treatment takes about 3 months to dry.
Rgds
