RE: One sheet 4x8 disasters (lessons learned today at the saw)

As to Lesson #1, it probably goes without saying that you should begin a project like this by making a test cut in a scrap piece of wood to see how much wood the blade removes. Next, use a sharp blade! How do you know if it's sharp? If you're burning wood, or if the sawdust feels hot, the blade is dull. Very good blades are pricey, but decent ones are cheaper than a ruined 4 X 8 sheet of good plywood. You can minimize tear-out by laying a strip of masking tape down through the middle of where the cut line will be, both sides if you want both to be as smooth as possible. Don't expect this trick to transform a dull course ripper into something you could make pianos with though. Hi-E regular Bill Fitzmaurice published an excellent article in Speaker Builder/AudioXpress several years ago about constructing a panel cutter for a circular saw. You probably won't see the usefulness of a device like this untill you try a big project without it. The One Sheet Wonder Club merely defines the possibiltiy of making the cab with one sheet. With some bar clamps and glue, you can widen short cut panels to the correct dimensions.

Good luck! Get lotsa wood putty.

Paul
