Actually it happened *far* earlier than that. Once they finalized the DVD spec in December of 1995, the next year I formed a coalition with Ayre, Muse, and Resolution Audio to make playback hardware (Theta Digital did so independently) as well both Chesky Records and Classic Records to make software.
By the January 1997 CES we played about a half-dozen discs (that were for sale) on prototype hardware that shipped later that year.
So it's been around for over 20 years now.
