I think it is just a matter of education. I am a musician and have been in recording studios and I depended on the engineers to demonstrate and explain differences. I can't imagine that most artists have tin ears and wouldn't be impressed by a demonstration. Besides, for the amount of money that the recording studios are charging major labels/artists for time, these studios should be using state of the art recording systems.
