any op amp can be broken down into discrete components - and it should then be possible to implement a higher quality circuit whilst retaining (hopefully) significant characteristics.So yes, you could implement a good analog stage that would outpeform the equivalent op amp. It would require a bit of SPICE (or equivalent) modelling, but hey this is not rocket science.
But seriously, how many implementations actually do this? One of the reasons I built my player is because I was tired of seeing high end players with fundamental design errors which in my not so humble opinion were probably compromising the sound. Again, not specifically pointing fingers at anyone here.
