No, they're still up there near the best, and they are user repairable, just order the right parts. I get parts for my HD580s and repair them myself. (Many parts are interchangeable between the 580 and 600.) I replace cushions every couple years. You can find video reapir guides on Youtube. Any item that you actually wear will wear out, just like a pair of sneakers. There's a lot of slick-looking new phones out there (Beats, etc.), and most of them stink sonically. They are fashion statements that try to be audiophile headphones. Personally, I don't like sticking things in my ears. One other note is that different headphones match better with some headphone amps than others. Some require a decent amp (and source material) to sound good. Others are more forgiving. Some Senn's may be somewhat more forgiving.
You CAN get ones that you may like a little better than the HD600s, but they ain't cheap (a lot more than $169). Lots of reviews of these on headfi.org, etc. For my money, the best ones still come from Audeze, Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, AKG, etc.
Also, in a headphone, comfort becomes almost as important as sound quality, and that varies widely between brands. Personal preference in sound, fit, and style is even more important in a headphone than in other audio components.
