The HD800 stock cable is ok but nothing more than that.
If you check the Head-Fi site, virtually every HD800 owner has upgraded the cable - and for good reason. Replacing the cable takes the HD800 to a whole other level. I use a Moon Audio Blue Dragon but there are others. Just 2 weeks ago, I took my HD800 with the Blue Dragon to an audiophile friend who also has the HD800 but with the stock cable. We played them side by side in his headphone amp.
I didn't say a word to let him arrive at his own conclusion, though I knew what the outcome would be. I could see the expression on his face - he was shocked at the improvement, just as I was when I got my new cable. "More of everything" he said - more detail, more transparency, deeper more extended bass, etc. etc. All for some $300 (I know, I know.)
Having experienced the new cable, I would find it hard to listen to a set with the old cable. Just do it.
