It doesn't drive the ER-4s' very well. But, I would not use that as a criterion to judge the sound quality of the ZipClip or ClipZip (I can't remember which, since I disposed of the packaging and the device only has the SanDisk label on it). The ER-4s' at 100 ohm impedance take some horsepower to sound their best (Etymotic promotes the ER-4p for use with low power devices like cell phones and ipods). The Hifiman has some horsepower (more than the typical portable DAP). In fact the HiFiman 601 will drive my Sennheiser HD600's quite well. So the ClipZip will do best with a low impedance high efficiency headset. My sense, without actually doing the comparison, is that for its price the ClipZip would do well with a good quality headset. So if you have a headset that works well with a cell phone, I suspect it should do well with the ClipZip.At some point in the near future I will upgrade the headset that came with the ClipZip, mostly for durability issues. But as suggested above, I think the ClipZip has the sound quality to support a good quality headset.
As far as "uncompressed" flac, I don't know enough to answer your question. All I can say is that I use dppoweramp to convert to flac. I use the dbpoweramp default compression setting of "5" when converting files.
