Man Hifiman is crushing it with the values. Edition XS for $269 and Arya stealth for $599 and $529 refurbed. Those used to be $1600 phones. Amazing deals.
Sadly because of a brain tumor I haven't worked in over a year and 1/2 so while I have the dough its not prudent given the medical debt....yea healthcare system!
So I decided to just maximize what I have.
1st off the shure KSE1200 is fantastic and probably the most resolving thing out there without spending 5k. I have it and it rocks. The Akg n5005 is almost as good and I have 2 of them. Amazingly effortless and better bass than the KSE1200.
2nd. I have some great headphones and I decided to maximize them. Heavily modded Monolith M1060 got some attention and the headband replaced with hifiman suspension headband. Have to say if I bought the Arya Stealth for $599 and they sounded like this modded M1060 I would be super happy. Big stage resolving lots of bass and great imaging.
Ultrasone Edition 11. THis is a headphone no one really has. Only 1111 were made and I have #465. Its really resolving and super big. One of my faves. Only thing is that its like my HD600...no bass. So it got some new pads and I have set up a behringer Ultracurve 24/96 to be the eq for it and am working on adding bass. But as an audiophile I must say that I am sort of clueless about eq. Its like that meme of the smiley face...
Ultrasone Signature Pro. It has the bass the Edition 11 doesn't and is just super fun. Dampened it a bit and am just enjoying it. Not as wide or clear as the 11 but man its a solid headphone.
Have a 2nd system that will time permitting get some cmp2 work and see how that compares to hysolid.
So probably not going to be buying anything for audio but if I get some Christmas dough who knows.
Also I unplugged my Black Ice stereo expander. I like it but on my 2nd system without one, I noticed I was enjoying the mids alot more so have taken it out of the loop for now and giving up some width...thats the big lesson: phones and iems just don't sound like speakers. At least without spending $4-5k on some processing devices and even then, so chasing that at lower prices is a waste.
Phones that are going back in the closet:
-Shure 1840. Nice but boring and superfluous.
-Beyerdynamic Tyger 300 will get put away too. DMS said it was like speakers but never got that sound on my rig.
-Hd600. Its great but the modded M1060 is just better. Bigger bassier and just as clear.
Iems in use for bluetooth off the Akg n5005 adaptor:
Shure Se 860- sounds great and has a nice fit and stays in place better than the akg.
Fio S3 or something. Has mmcx connectors for when the battery on the Shure goes.
So will just be happy and play with EQ.
Though I AM looking at getting the Khadus Tea portable amp to ditch bluetooth.
Have a great holiday!
