Temptation got the best of me and I finally bought a pair of these top-of-the-line STAX electrostatic headphones. I don't know whether they're worth the price, but they do sound exceptional. I thought my SR-007MK2 headphones were perfect, but these SR-X9000 headphones are even more perfect. The difference between the two is quite audible.

The SR-X9000 sounds more open and transparent compared to the SR-007MK2, which now sounds slightly veiled and muffled, especially in the deep bass and upper treble. Until I heard the new SR-X9000, I thought the SR-007MK2 were absolutely unmatched in sound quality. Even at my old age of 76, the difference between the two is noticeable and the SR-X9000 headphones are a definite improvement.
