I haven't heard a Dragonfly Red but I did own the Black version for a few weeks.
I was going to try the Red but then I read about the Sabaj DA2 so I thought I would try it. It sounded noticeably better than the Black so that is what I ended up with. I think I paid around $70 for the Sabaj and I have seen them going for less than that. It supposedly won't work well with an Android phone and it may use too much power to work well with older iPhones. I use it with my laptop, Grado RS-2's or Koss Porta Pro's and for a cheap headphone amp, I think it sounds good.
