Headphones for MP3 player/Ipod? In-ear?

My son (12 yrs old) is looking for some headphones for an MP3 player/Ipod. I am trying to convince him to go for sound quality but his generation seems to be stuck on headsets like the Monster Beat sets which look cool :-) For an active/moving teen the in-ear phones seem (to me) to be more practical. Assuming this is the right track (in-ear) what product would you suggest for under $100? Is there a step up in quality once you get into the over the ear sets? Helps is appreciated on what direction to go.
