The M50 doesn't require amplification and so is a nice choice on travel, in the office and so forth. Unamped, it provides good detail, if perhaps a bit less in the midrange than I might want. But still I use it all the time with jazz and classical. Love the sound of guitars in rock music with this, nonetheless. Very little to no sense of space. These are closed back and do a very nice job at isolation. I can rock out at work and not bother my cube mate... at all.
I use the Beyer DT 990/600, so not the same as what you're getting. But both 880 an 990 give a lovely sense of space and openness. On my head, the Beyer cups are more comfortable than the M50. On my head, the M50s have greater clamping force, commensurate with their sonic isolation. The 600 ohm Beyers, as you already know, just have to be amplified. Otherwise just underwhelming. I most often use mine with a SS portable amp (ALO Audio Rx MKIIIb) and it's just lovely and controlled AND very spacious.
Some are bothered by the high frequencies on the Beyers. I don't have that experience at all... so I'm not sure if my hearing is just lacking or if some listeners are severely under amplifying. Hope that helps.
