Re: Laptop Recording

I would like to do this sometime soon too, but the company is not buying! Win2000 or WinXP and Apple OS 9 or X are fine. A large hard drive that runs at 5400 rpm or faster is nice. The 4200 rpm drives can have trouble with I/O as you add more tracks, but are probably OK for stereo only and minimal video :-). Lots of RAM is always better, so if they'll give you 1GB or 2GB ;-) get it. You should also make sure it has a dedicated video card that does not share memory for display purposes; if it does, it can mess with the audio stream.

Make sure you get a laptop that runs the software you want to use and has a firewire interface. I would not use USB for high quality audio like you are used to with DVD-Audio. I recommend RME's new firewire interface, the FireFace 800, which is not cheap, but looks absolutely top notch in quality and goes up to 24/192. Both Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU), M-Audio and Edirol also sell firewire interfaces. The next step down is the cardbus interfaces that are offered by RME, www.echoaudio.com, (Digigram VXPocket is limited to only 24/50), and others, which plug into the laptops PCMIA slot.

RME did some tests on older laptops which helps narrow down ones that work well (look under "Support --> Technical Info" on their website). Their news group may also help. Unfortunately, it is tough to know how well a laptop will perform from its specifications. Some get great performance from Intel and others from AMD processors, and others from Apple Powerbooks, and the brands can have some laptops that work well and others that don't. I would recommend a good return policy in case it does not perform up to your needs. The seller should respect your situation and high quality demands.

I do not work for any of the companies or sell any of the products mentioned. I do own an RME Digi PAD.

I hope this helps.

Ben
