RE: Mac 225

Although the 225 utilizes the Mac unity coupled output stage, the drive circuit is somewhat different from the more traditional implementations like MC30, 60, 240 etc. Biggest difference is that it doesn't have the cathode follower driver stage so circuit is simpler. Many listeners also attribute the "sound" to 7591 finals. 7591 along with the 8417 were about the last finals designed for consumer use so benefit from decades of development and refinement. Sensitive with not much drive required. Another factor is that the versions I've experienced had mostly newer mylar/paper caps instead of the failure prone "bumblebee" paper caps. The cubical OPTs might be a factor too ;-)
