RE: DAC Kit 2.1 Level C output level

Sergey,

The DAC 2.1x Signature (production model) appears to differ substantially from the DAC Kit 2.1 Level C Signature. That being the case, the specifications, including the 3v rms output level, cannot be assumed to be the same. The AudioNote Kits website does specify "2.5 v rms both channels" for the DAC Kit 2.1 Level C.

Since the CDs that came with the kit may not have a reference level signal (maybe just a 1kHz signal for signal tracing and circuit debugging - per Brians response below) we really have no way to compare voltage measurements from the 2 DACs (mine and yours), or to verify that they meet the output specification. For the same reason, I have not measured the output from my digital board. There is no means of comparison unless we are using the same level signal (or know what the signal level is on each CD).

Even though my kit does not produce 2.5 v rms using the included CD, it still does a superb job of driving my passive preamp and 45 SET power amplifier. Does your kit drive your system to adequate levels? If so, I would not worry about it.

If your kit is not adequately driving your system, what is it connected to (preamp/input impedance)? If both channels share this problem, then the cause is likely to be shared by them as well: either incorrect power supply voltages or a parts substitution at the same circuit location in both channels. In addition to the power supply voltages which you measured, it would probably be useful to know what the dc voltage is on each plate and cathode of the analog output stage (4 triodes total).

Brian is far and away THE expert here on the AudioNote kits that he sells. Working with him is your best chance of solving your DAC problem. The lack of a functional email address for you (according to AudioAsylum) will make this dificult.

Good luck,

Bob
