Dave,
I am using a 170i and a factory DAC 1.1 MK II Sig with awesome results. The jitter is so bad in the 170i however that something has to be done to correct it. I am using a Monarchy Audio DIP reclocking device, which improves everything about the combo. I tried it with my 2.1 level C, and found that sound was even better (but my 2.1 C has Ultra HIB transformers and has been maxxed out pretty well). I tried using that reclocker between my CDT-2/II and 2.1C and found that it did nothing to improve the sound. I am guessing the CDT-2/II has amazingly low jitter all on its own.
The Wadia i170 is a worthwhile device IF you plan to reclock. If you don't the sound is muddy, lacking resolution, and the imaging is not so great. Thats why there are so many of them for sale on Audiogon.
If you reclock the signal before it goes into the DAC, the results are astonishingly good. Even files that are compressed at 256kbps sound pretty darn good. Excellent low frequency extension. Natural non grainy voices that are projected between the speakers with a great hovering effect. and low level resolution that is surprisingly good.
It gets blown away by a CDT-2/II, but for a iPod system it sounds better than you would expect it too. Much better actually. As lonf as you reclock!
