What is the benefit of using a USB board that outputs I2S? Whether the ultimate output is I2S or S/PDIF, the USB interface interposes an additional VCO that is phase-locked to the USB heartbeat. It would be hard to find a worse clock source to control a DAC!
Changing the DAC chip would require radical changes to the digital PCB and that would make radical changes to the sound. It would be far easier to modify almost any I2S USB board to output right-justified, 18-bit data that matches the input of the existing DAC chip.
