Good points - aim is "bit perfect" output exactly as came off CD i.e. no dropped bits (there is software to test it). Simple !!!! you only then need to reduce jitter to min levels (reclocker !!). So that's it - "pure perfect sound forever". Problem is (you guessed) - hifi does not work like that. I use foobar eac etc. The sound quality is excellent the first digital sounds I could live with - am I getting rid of vinyl ? - not a chance - ever !!.
Squeezebox is v.convenient and can be cheaper to set up with a re-clocker (but does not play 24/96 files yet i think). Laptop allows much more control over the whole process. With both you have to be careful about playing music via a wireless link (router to squeezebox) as yer microwave (& next doors) radiates at same frequency as the router which means you cannot play music and heat up pizza at the same time (I used to stream music from a server to my laptop - had to give up eating pizza).
