This is my 1st post, although I've been lurking for a while.
I completed a L2 Pre-amp kit a few weeks ago and had been running it in on average 3-4 hrs a day, up to 5-6 hrs on weekends. Apart from the gain that I would like to reduce and a slight hum at very high volumes, it seemed to be working fine with my AN P1 SE power amp.
About a week ago, in the midst of playing some music, it suddenly stopped working. I discovered the fuse was blown and replaced it with the spare supplied with the kit.
When the power was switched on again, all the tubes lit up and everything seemed fine. The pre-amp was not connected to anything else apart from the mains power. However, I started to hear crackling and at first I thought it was coming from the 6x5GT tube. Smoke then suddenly appeared from the power transformer (the chasis cover was still off) and I immediately switched off the mains power. The transformer emitted the smell of something burnt.
Brian has very kindly sent a new mains transformer and suggested that I check the line board resistors have been put in place correctly. He also thinks the 6x5 tube may have been the cause.
Apart from these, is there anything else I should check to discover or eliminate the problem? I would like to avoid installing the new transformer only to have it burn up like the old one.
I should add that before this incident, I was starting to like the L2 and I had a lot of fun building it.
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and for any advice you may provide.
