Your diode selection will work OK in the Kit-1

Remember that the banded end of the diode is the cathode (or end of the diode shown in the schematic as the "end with a line", as opposed to the "triangle end") configure 4 diodes as shown (not in parallel or series, bus as shown) to complete a bridge rectifier.
