As I can't afford the luxury of experimenting with expensive caps, I sought out advice on replacing the Jensen aluminum stock caps. I had a conversation with a local small time (but highly regarded) preamp maker, Richard Dolan, who firmly believes in film caps at the expense of electrolytics, and claims to have tried all the film caps out there, including V-Caps. According to him, the V-Caps were very nice, but a little sterile, and not nearly as good as the Mundorf Silver/Oil caps, which cost well less than half the price. I took his word for it, and have never regretted doing so. The background got blacker, detail went up, the sound became more dynamic and very smooth. For about $100 CDN it was a major upgrade. I only wish the Silvers were available in the 0.015 or 0.022 range to replace the smaller Jensens, but those values only come in the pricy Silver/Gold models.I should add that I have no issue with AN caps, except their price.
