RE: Autoformers and transformers have their own sound colorations

It was a DIY TVC I had on loan. The sound was good but lacked dynamics in my system, not to mention the already mentioned drawbacks for me. To give you a couple specifics, I am now accustomed to Volume controls with 100-steps or more with the Volume level precisely repeatable each and every time, and a preamp that mates well with most other components in the system w/o being finicky about it.... while sounding excellent, too.

A preamp is not just about SQ. It is there for source switching, impedance matching, and convenience. And many DO sound excellent. Hence, their popularity compared to exotic approaches like the TVC.
