That we can't fully quantify hearing is probably true but it is such an audiophile meme. There is a huge wealth of information on the psychology of hearing though I would caution that what is measured suggests our hearing isn't as good as we'd like to think. (Trigger warning) Our ears are pretty non-linear and are within a feedback loop (how could nature get it so wrong) and signals are quantized with low resolution and the whole listening experience comes together with a ton of signal processing by a brain that sits in a dark place and creates its own model of the outside world. So, maybe there is more to discover but why can't those who say that put that in context of everything we do know? Note, ask a hearing psychologist to specify a hi-fi system and it will not be a very demanding specification. They don't think we hear as well as audiophiles do.
But, if one resistor or piece of wire can make or break the sound of an amplifier then I can't see us ever understanding. Still, it makes a good story and allows manufacturers to keep making more expensive products
