Amp/Preamp Asylum Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here. |

Bought this little amp for fun, and maybe modifying - anyhow this is what I heard/found:
The Nobsound is a true class A power amplifier with an attenuator knob. It measures just over 12 watts per channel. The left channel pushed out a watt more, so some adjustment need to be made. This amp is about the size and weight of the Monarchy Pro 70 and runs very warm, almost hot.
The little amp has some grunt to it, as it easily handled efficient speakers like my Devore Super Nines up to 84DB - louder than I usually listen to music at (78DB normally). The full sound spectrum was well exhibited by the amp and it never faltered during the 1 1/2 hour trial.
The sound stage of the amplifier is rather compressed compared to my Wavelength Cardinals (all my comparisons will be to the WCs). The stage height of the stage is slightly shorter - but the depth is virtually flat. Perhaps 20% of the WCs. Everything is tossed into the middle, with a few instrument placements slightly to either side.
The amps tonality overall is about neutral - perhaps a notch to the darker side of things. Midrange vocals do not have the warmth and intimacy of an audiophile amp - but it is still smooth and enjoyable. The highs are not etched or fingernails on the chalkboard...not sure I would say silky smooth, as they are maybe a touch rolled and are missing that sparkle and airiness - but the bass establishes good foundation and has balance - not overly tight and not blubbery loose. The lower midrange may have a 3DB rise which provides the bass with its beefiness and weight.
Conclusion - The sound quality is better than most commercial audio amplifiers such as Onkyo, Sony, Technics. The quality is more akin to NAD or Luxman. Really.
Despite the low power rating, the amp's quality of sound would be hard to beat in its priced range.
Over the next few weeks, I will open the amp up and balance out the amps AC current draw and current idle, and check to see if any caps can be replaced to open up the soundstage.
