I came to the same solution 5-6 years ago: that the a to d and d to a nonsense was a culprit. Have been driving my vintage 15 inch Tannoy 384HPDs with a Tact 2150 amp, no DAC or preamp, source my computer or a midlevel cd player used as a transport.
Altho I wish TACT was better known, I think Lyndorf is still selling the same basic amp under his own name out of Europe.
