I picked up a 'department store' Onkyo receiver in the mid-1990's that replaced and totally out classed my NAD receiver of the same era.
The NAD receiver was rolled off, veiled, compressed, and the remote control was quirky. It was $399. The Onkyo was $199 and I still own it today.
This gave me a bad impression of NAD but to be honest I haven't tried any NAD gear since the mid-1990's.
Another thought: The Outlaw RR2150 receiver is excellent if you can get beyond it's faux retro look. New: $699 direct every day, $599 on sale now and then around the holidays.
