Question about impedance matching

I have recently learned that impedance matching is important in blending electronic components. That is, source components should have low output impedances , preamps should have high input impedances but low output impedance, and amplifiers should have high input impedance.
Why? To be anthropomorphic, why should a power amp care if the up-stream preamp has high output impedance or if its input impedance is low? What is the effect on performance?
